Palmers Green is now a suburban residential suburb of Victorian and Edwardian houses. These houses being for the most part the earliest mass available stock. In the early eighteen hundreds, records show that there were only 54 houses in Palmers Green and the land around was owned by wealthy land owners in the form of estates which they steadfastly refused to sell. Then in 1902, something persuaded these landowners to start selling this land for Palmers Green new build developments as they were in those days. The first two tranches of houses for sale were built on the two estates, the Old Park estate and the Hazelwood Park estate. These early houses were very large and came with very large gardens. Hazelwood primary school was established by 1908 to service these new houses in Palmers Green. These were not however detached but terraced houses which were served by a railway line at Aldermans Hill that ran from Wood Green to Enfield. The very first houses recorded were at the corner of Fox Lane and Green Lanes. The building works continued so that there is now a fine stock of Victorian terraced houses in Palmers Green with some roads having the odd semi detached house and even more rarely the odd detached houses. Between and after the wars the ubiquitous semi detached houses sprang up rapidly and between these and the older house provide the main types of property to buy in Palmers Green. The later built properties offer gardens, garages and scope to extend although many have already been extended to very spacious family homes. Flats in Palmers Green can be found in the earlier houses as period conversions with very spacious rooms and some are available as garden flats. In addition there are some older purpose built flats as well as small developments of newly build flats. |
