Much of the beauty and appeal of Hampstead can undoubtedly be attributed to it’s convenient positioning, as always, Location Location Location. It neighbours several square miles of uninterrupted countryside in the form of Hampstead Heath, surely one of the most sought after recreational jewels in the area.
Multiple Dog Walkers
So just how threatened is the idyllic Hampstead Heath by the excessive number of dogs accompanying the multiple dog walkers?
For many of us at this time of year, a favourite pastime is rambling through autumn leaves picking up the occasional conker but unfortunately it would appear that on Hampstead Heath the good old Horse Chestnut seeds are increasingly being outnumbered by a far less attractive deposit.
Hampstead Heath Consultative Committee
This week, when the Hampstead Heath Consultative Committee appointed by City of London Corporation convened to address the proposals of a “dog behaviour code”, it was agreed that the Heath Management Committee should proceed with a detailed feasibility study. It is also hoped that a further study into shared use cycle ways will be undertaken with an aim to stop cyclists illegally using the dilapidated track on the Heath.
Most users of Hampstead Heath are responsible
We are unquestionably a nation of dog lovers and thankfully, most dog owners are responsible. Furthermore, interest in cycling is on the increase which is surely benefiting the health of many but perhaps when it comes to those few who threaten to spoil the idyllic setting of Hampstead Heath, the message might well be “on your bike”
